The Thule 599XTR Big Mouth Upright Rooftop Bicycle Carrier sets the standard for bike carrying flexibility and ease of use. The 599XTR is an updated version of Thule’s 599XT, but still requires the Xadapt2 to be used with an Aero bar.

The easy-to-mount Thule Big Mouth Upright has a convenient, rack-level bike clamping feature, and worry-free, automatic self-adjusting jaws for perfect bike clamping every time. The Thule Big Mouth accommodates bike frames up to 3.125-inches in diameter, fits both Thule and Yakima load bars, and features a dual-locking design that simultaneously locks the bike to the carrier and the carrier to the rack. This bicycle carrier system is constructed with a black anodized aluminum wheel tray that is built to last, and can be customized with 790 Tray skins. The 599XTR weighs 10.5 pounds in total, and is compatible with the Thule One-Key System (not included), and can be locked securely with a single lock cylinder.

Great rack that fits my Volvo V70 removable sport bars. This rack is well built, very easy to operate from the ground. It securely clamps the oversized aluminum tubes of my son’s trek. I have noticed a slight decrease in fuel mileage over using a wheel off bike rack.

This bike rack is awsome. It takes all the weight and distributes it evenly on the roof of the car, while other rear bike racks eventually will damage your car’s suspension, (I speak from experience). It fits any bike, from little light weight roadies to serious full suspension downhill monsters! It does have a pretty good locking system however, like most bike/ski/snowboard racks, they are just a deterent. If somebody reallys wants your gear, they’ll get it. Better to unload when parked overnight, or in sketchy locations. I have two of these babies and my fiance and I travel in style in our 89 Civic with our two bikes on the roof!! Here we come Whistler bike park!

I wanted a rack that could directly mount to my Toyota Sienna (2003) and my RAV4 (2006) factory racks- the large clamps on this unit allows for this and provide a solid, stable mount without additional hardware. I also wanted something that didn’t require the removal of the front wheel, and this also fit the bill. I was a little skeptical at first because the main mount seems a bit flimsy, but when you lock it down, it works and my bikes remain motionless, even with my bikes which are all 61cm road bikes. The Thule locks are easy to install and provide a small level of protection for when you really need to leave your bike- as with any of the bike rack locks, I wouldn’t leave an expensive bike unattended for too long because the locks probably wouldn’t slow down a bike thief too much.

I’d definitely recommend these to anyone looking for a rack, especially for those with factory racks with crossbars that this unit will fit. It will save you about $300 in additional hardware.
