Product Description

The Thule 598 Criterium Upright Rooftop Bicycle Carrier is a quick and easy way to secure your bicycle to your vehicle’s roof rack. The Thule Criterium provides a rack level dial-activated clamp with a push button clamp release, and a sleek sculpted wheel tray, but does require an Xadapt8 when used on an Aero bar.

The Criterium provides you with easy bike loading, with a sculpted wheel tray and support arm clamp that work together to help keep the bike in position when securing it to the carrier. Unloading the bike is a breeze as well, with a fast, push-button clamp release. This bicycle carrier features a simple-to-use rack level adjustment dial that closes the clamp around the bike tube for ultimate transport stability, and a low-profile wheel tray and dual-action wheel strap that fits all tire sizes without the need for a wheel adaptor. The Thule Criterium accommodates bike frames up to 3.375-inches in diameter, and fits both Thule and Yakima load bars. This bicycle carrier system is constructed of anodized aluminum, steel, and rubber, weighs 10.5 pounds in total, and is compatible with the Thule One-Key System so it can be locked securely with two lock cylinders.

I wanted a rack that could directly mount to my Toyota Sienna (2003) and my RAV4 (2006) factory racks- the large clamps on this unit allows for this and provide a solid, stable mount without additional hardware. I also wanted something that didn’t require the removal of the front wheel, and this also fit the bill. I was a little skeptical at first because the main mount seems a bit flimsy, but when you lock it down, it works and my bikes remain motionless, even with my bikes which are all 61cm road bikes. The Thule locks are easy to install and provide a small level of protection for when you really need to leave your bike- as with any of the bike rack locks, I wouldn’t leave an expensive bike unattended for too long because the locks probably wouldn’t slow down a bike thief too much.

I’d definitely recommend these to anyone looking for a rack, especially for those with factory racks with crossbars that this unit will fit. It will save you about $300 in additional hardware.
